To better understand the matting process it is useful to picture the layers of a completed art piece, or the "Frame Package." The basic frame package consists of a frame, a glaze (glass or plexiglass), a mat, a mounting board to support the art, a backing board, a paper dust cover, bumpers, and a hanger wire.

The Dust Cover is glued or taped to the back of the frame. A Hanging Wire is then attached to the back of the frame. Rubber or felt Bumpers can be added to the back of the frame to lift the bottom of the frame away from the wall for air circulation.
The Backing Board is held in place by glazier points or brads. It can be made of matboard, or foamcore may be used for a lighter frame package.
The Mounting Board and Mat secure the art in place and lay face down on the glaze.
The Glaze fits into the back of the frame. Clean the glaze thoroughly. Carefully blow out of the frame any sawdust, dirt or metal slivers before inserting the glaze.
